"A copper mesh of a billion phone lines and hybrid fiber co-ax encircles the planet. The number of lines is actually going down, not up, and in three to four years excess traffic will have to be carried wirelessly. Both wired and wireless networks attach to fiber backhaul tightly interwoven to reach all but the most rural or inhospitable parts of the world.
Broadband is installed on 23% of these lines and rising, shifting data at 1Mbps or more. Wireless broadband is now a possibility. Faster DSL and wireless technologies, will mean the total bandwidth available will increase in a few years by a factor of 20.
As a result, video is becoming more of a one to one experience, rather than a broadcast phenomena and fallout for broadcasting networks and the re-invention of advertising models is now inevitable. Companies fastest to change will gain significant momentum.
