In many ways, this year’s Mobile World Congress will see WiFi embraced by the 3GPP community as never before. The GSMA and the Wireless Broadband Alliance (WBA) will join hands to support a WiFi network complete with Next Generation Hotspot and Passpoint capabilities across the venue, and over 30 operators will be involved (up from six last year). “WiFi has been embraced by the cellular community as technology which neatly complements existing infrastructure investment,” the WBA’s CEO, Shrikant Shenwai, in a statement. “By making the user experience, security and roaming agreements the same as their cellular counterparts, it now offers the perfect solution to provide additional capacity and coverage for operators.” That is true, as far as it goes.
