Royal Philips, better known by just its surname, has announced the first major installation of its indoor positioning enabled lighting system. Carrefour, a French multinational retailer, has chosen the Philips system for use in a newly refurbished hypermarket in the French town of Lille. The system was first seen over a year ago at the EuroShop tradeshow, and Carrefour was likely one of the unnamed testers announced back then. The system will allow the 2.5km of newly installed LED lighting to send data to smartphones by way of visible light communication (VLC) – an approach that essentially sends binary information by turning the lighting on and off faster than the human eye can detect.
