Qualcomm may be attacking Intel in the heart of its business with its new server chips (see separate item), but Intel is doing the same with its acquisition of the CDMA assets of VIA Telecom of Taiwan. This will enable it to try to break Qualcomm’s stranglehold on the technology it invented, albeit rather late in the platform’s life, and go even further than VIA’s belated breakthrough with its MediaTek alliance. With all the talk about CDMA-based operators like Verizon moving to LTE, it is easy to forget that there is still a huge installed base of CDMA networks and devices, and will be for many years to come.
