When Nokia and BlackBerry both set up ‘Technology Solutions’ divisions, primarily to license their patents and other assets, it was easy to see the moves as the last sad bid to squeeze some drops of revenue out of once-glorious assets. Now, as the smartphone ceases to be a significant driver of profits and growth, the sun may have set on that business for all the traditional players, not just the veteran trio of Nokia, Motorola and BlackBerry.
