The smartphone market had settled down into a fairly predictable rut until this year – sales increasingly concentrated in the hands of Samsung and Apple, with older suppliers like Motorola, Nokia and Sony struggling for air. But 2014 is nearing the holiday buying season with very different dynamics coming into play – most significantly, the rise of a wave of Chinese players to steal share from the big two, and either to buy the old stagers or squeeze them further; and the possible peaking of Android’s power.
