Australia’s CleanCo has received $32 million of Queensland state backing for its 2 GW / 20 GWh Mt Rawdon pumped hydro project – which we estimate will cost $4 billion to $8 billion to build. There are now nineteen pumped hydro projects under development in Australia, according to this list from February. A majority are smaller than the Mt Rawdon Project, coming in at a few hundred MW of power and several GWh of storage capacity. Alongside Snowy Hydro 2.0’s wildly outsize 350 GWh, the seventeen other projects with an announced size would provide a further 192 GWh, for a total 542 GWh.
