The California Independent System Operator (CAISO) curtailed 919 GWh of solar and wind power in the month of April alone. The US Energy Information Administration (EIA) reports that solar and wind curtailment in California grew 29% from 2023 to 2024, almost all of it solar, for reasons that become visibly obvious when consulting the CAISO website’s graphs – on this one, renewables exceeded demand for several hours in the middle of the day (granted, this excess was outscaled by battery charging demand).
