Eleven of China’s provinces (there are 33 in total excluding Taiwan) now have over 50% of their capacity coming from wind and solar power, with the highest share being 71% in Qinghai. Even if the pace of new additions stalls or shrinks temporarily at around 300 GW solar and 100 GW wind annually from now on, that share will continue to increase – and the necessary energy storage to keep the grid stable will increase disproportionately as the share gets higher.
