As expected the Steering Board of the DVB project has approved the new DVB-NGH (next generation handheld) specification at its latest meeting held this week. This is a standard, based on DVB-T2 which when seen alongside developments in the 3GPP standards base, may finally create an avalanche of content delivery over cellular to handsets. Even if it does it will have been a long road and the unmitigated disaster of the DVB-H specification, that ate literally years of market lead in Europe and eventually led to broadcast TV to a handset becoming a dirty word, may be forgotten.
