Nokia claimed a world first, back in June, carrying out what it said was the first call using the 3GPP Immersive Voice and Audio Services (IVAS) codec. At MWC, we got to test out IVAS, with an ad-hoc live call back to Finland that was not part of the demo. It was impressive, but monetization questions remain. In Barcelona, the demo was simple – a pair of noise cancelling Sony WH-1000-XM5 headphones, with surround sound capabilities that support head tracking, and a Google Pixel 9 smartphone.
