Advance Green Energy AD has commissioned a 124/496.2 MWh BESS project in Bulgaria, with a 6-month construction period. Bulgaria’s Energy Minister states that the country has a goal of 10 GWh BESS operational ‘within the next year’, having awarded 9.7 GWh in a recent tender. This is the largest BESS project in the EU so far, and it’s rather surprising that Bulgaria should be such a stand-out center of battery development – one explanation that springs to mind is that it neighbors Ukraine, and is therefore a node in the chain of electricity exports leading into that country which stretches over multiple countries.
