RAN Research forecasts disruption in wireless technology, and is essential reading for anyone who wants to stay on top of current trends and thinking among Mobile Network Operators.
The current signs do not point to Network API being a trend that will radically improve MNO fortunes. This should be no great surprise. Within the next decade, things will change, but in terms of a short-term turnaround, you should not believe the hype.
The core problem? MNOs are up against hyperscalers like AWS and Microsoft in the edge compute race – and they’re losing the brand and business model battle.
This isn’t to say that MNOs will not have some success in Network API, but our view is that the near-term market is leagues away from what the likes of McKinsey suggest it will be. The initial five-year customer interest in Network APIs will be on the identity management side of things – not the buzzy ‘spin up a network slice on demand’ promises that have been floated by the most ardent zealots.
